A Little Perspective

January 27th, 2010 by Mat Dolphin

When I first started writing this blog back in July ‘09 I didn’t really get blogs, let alone read or follow other peoples. I didn’t have a full understanding of the benefits of Twitter, and I certainly didn’t want to launch a Mat Dolphin Facebook group. What would be the point?Perspective

Social Media wasn’t something at the top of our priority list, let alone thinking about augmented reality sitting around the corner. Cut to nearly seven months later and here we are everyday talking and connecting with new people in new places. Our thinking had to change in a world that’s ever changing. We might have taken a while to get here but we’re catching up.

Now, maybe it’s because I’m newly immersed in all this fancy social media on a daily basis, but in the last few weeks I’ve noticed a shift in behaviour. A small shift mind you, but one big enough to register.

Today Apple launches the much anticipated iTablet. Whenever Steve Jobs is about to (and we obviously get plenty of warning) don his infamous apple uniform (does he wear that at weekend too?) people start talking and getting overly excited.

The Twitterati, Mashable, and everyone else we follow and listen to have been talking about today’s launch for weeks. Since I’ve been involved in using social media this feels for me the first ‘event’ to capture peoples focus and attention.

Now, I don’t in anyway want to diminish what Apple have achieved over the past few years. I’ve consumed their goods at a rate of knots like everyone else, but this ‘e-reader’ is a laptop without a keyboard. A giant iPhone too big for your pocket. What’s behind the screen (the OS) is what will probably change our behaviour, but I feel a little perspective is needed in the launch of Apple’s toy. The more I immerse myself in Tweetdeck et al the less I’m discovering new things and everything becomes a daily repetitive blur. Even Pete Cashmore’s lot are getting bored of talking about the iSlate.

Maybe I’ll be proved wrong and this new device will literally change my life forever. I don’t even know if I’m target audience but I walk, talk and breathe so maybe I am. And obviously there’s a certain amount of irony in the fact I’m blogging about it now, but I’m looking forward to tomorrow when we can move onto the next event.

Bring on the augmentation…

Mat
