Pring & Rose

March 26th, 2012 by Mat Dolphin

We just came across this faded old printers sign on a lunchtime walkabout.

We’re not the first to spot it by any means, but we like it all the same.

Bring back the good old days of signwriting we say…

Five Things 015

December 8th, 2011 by Mat Dolphin

We realised recently that it’s been AGES since we last posted a Five Things. For the uninitiated, it’s a regular series in our blog in which we share five interesting, creative things that we’ve spotted on the world wide internet over the course of the last week or so. It’s always a mixed bag, and this post in no different. Jelly hand grenades, flying dogs, sitting on Hercules’ face and festive booze are just a few of the things you can expect to see this time round. Take two minutes out of your day, put your feet up and have a look at what we’ve found for you.

Ten Questions 019 – Will Robson-Scott

August 17th, 2011 by Mat Dolphin

We noticed the other day that our Ten Questions series has had a rather severe shortage of photographers. While the majority of focus on the blog has been on graphic design, our influences and inspirations come from far and wide. Photography is one of those areas and we plan to showcase plenty more of it on the blog in the future. Will Robson-Scott is a photographer who came to my attention some time ago with his series showing the London grime movement. Shining a light on the more outsider or marginalised subcultures has become a bit of a theme in his work, the most recent example of this being his Ego Bombing series, showing graffiti writers going about their business in and around London. The series eventually became the basis for Crack and Shine, a book produced in collaboration with publisher Fred Forsyth, TopSafe and Vans. The success of Crack and Shine enabled the collaboration to continue in the shape of Crack and Shine International, where Robson-Scott travelled to various major cities around the world to document some of the most well known graffiti writers in their natural habitat.

Will was kind enough to take some time to answer our Ten Questions.

WIN a years subscription to Creative Review!

March 1st, 2011 by Mat Dolphin

Okay, a bit of a different post from us today but hey, variety is the spice… and all that.

Last Thursday we attended the excellent Not Networking™ Glug event at Cargo. We missed every talk they held and pretty much stood by the burger bar all night, but we did catch up with old friends and new and at least got out of the Dolphin Heights studio for five minutes.

Source personnel (who kindly sponsored the event) asked people to check-in to the event using Foursquare with the chance of winning a years subscription to Creative Review. Not bad for simply clicking three buttons on your phone, so we duly did and low and behold we WON! The bad news is that we’re already subscribed to Creative Review (bummer!), but the good news is we’ve decided to give our subscription away in a competition. Yay!

Looking outwards

January 7th, 2011 by Mat Dolphin

Well, it seems like only a few days ago I was hanging up my stocking and untangling the Christmas tree lights. Before you know it, another year is upon us and the team at Mat Dolphin are charged up and ready for a good one. We’ve hit the ground running with some great new projects on the horizon and we can’t wait to get stuck in.

Catching up after the Christmas break and comparing socks, we got into a chat about what non-Christmas related activities we got up to. Being the geeky types who spend a bit too long slaving away in front of our layout pads and computers, the chance to go and check out the latest exhibitions and events is always a pleasure. We thought we’d share a couple of the best with you.

More socks?

December 7th, 2010 by Mat Dolphin

With Christmas fast approaching, it’s time to start planning that panic-stricken trawl around over-crowded shops to buy your loved ones that novelty toothbrush holder you suspect they’ve probably always wanted. Maybe.

Being the caring and sharing types we are here at Mat Dolphin, we thought we’d lend you a helping hand by giving you a few ideas for gift ideas for the ever difficult to please designer in your life. Every designer loves a beautifully produced book and we’ve scoured the bookshelves to find the best of the bunch in design literature.

August 26th, 2010 by Mat Dolphin

Douglas Bowden is a UK based illustrator and designer working under the name of Panda Yoghurt. His work for high profile clients including MTV, Computer Arts magazine, Wired magazine, Vodafone and Ninjatune has seen him develop his style into a unque blend of fluid illustrations and typography mixed with photography and collage. He was generous enough to take some time out to get involved with our ‘Ten Questions‘ blog series. Read on for his answers and some great examples of his work – more of which can be seen here.
